Softener, refiner, or whole-home filter?
EcoWater uses the term "refiner" for some of its systems. Brands name their products differently, so compare by what the equipment contains and does, not by the label. Ask: is there ion-exchange resin for hardness, carbon or catalytic media for chlorine or chloramine taste and odor, and in what amounts?
In much of South Florida the city water is disinfected, and many homeowners care about taste, odor and scale. A test shows which of those apply in your home. See water softener vs water filter for the basics.
Questions to ask either company
Whichever provider you talk to, these questions make quotes comparable:
| Ask this | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What did my water test show, in writing? | The recommendation should trace back to your hardness, disinfectant, iron or other measured results. |
| What is the exact model and what is it certified for? | Look up the model's NSF/ANSI or WQA listing for any specific contaminant claim. |
| Salt-based or salt-free, and why for my home? | They work differently; the choice should match your measured hardness and goals. |
| What does installation include? | Bypass valve, drain, electrical, faucet, permits: confirm nothing is left out. |
| What upkeep comes after year one? | Filters, media, salt, membrane changes and service visits. |
| Who honors the warranty, and what does it cover? | Manufacturer vs installer, parts vs labor, length, transfer on sale. |

How to choose for a South Florida home
- Start with your water. City homes usually ask about chlorine or chloramine taste and odor and about scale. Well homes may deal with iron, sulfur smell or hardness. Your utility's annual Water Quality Report is a good place to begin.
- Match the system type to the problem. A softener handles hardness; carbon-based whole-home filtration addresses taste and odor; under-sink reverse osmosis is a drinking-water option.
- Compare written quotes line by line. Equipment, installation, upkeep and warranty, not just the total.
