What GE Appliances says it offers
According to GE Appliances' website, its water products include:
- Whole-house filtration systems
- Reverse osmosis filtration systems
- Single- and dual-stage filtration systems
- Kitchen, bath and shower filtration
- In-line refrigerator and icemaker filters, plus replacement filters
- Salt-based water softeners in several grain capacities, some with a self-cleaning sediment filter and a "Days to Empty" salt reminder
GE's buying guide notes that many filters are replaced with "a twist or push" and lists whole-house filter changes about every 3 months and refrigerator and under-sink filters about every 6 months. It recommends looking for third-party certification from organizations such as NSF, IAPMO or WQA. For installation, GE's softener page gives a phone number to find an authorized installer. GE-brand whole-house, under-sink, reverse osmosis and in-line systems also appear on The Home Depot's website.

DIY vs professional install
Store-bought systems range from a refrigerator filter you can swap in seconds to a softener that needs main-line plumbing, a drain and power. Consider:
- Under-sink units: often manageable for a handy homeowner; reverse osmosis also needs a drain connection and a faucet hole.
- Whole-house filters and softeners: involve cutting into the main line, adding a bypass and often a drain. Ask your city or county about permits.
- Sizing: softener capacity should match your measured hardness and household use. A test strip and a guess can miss.
- Ongoing changes: frequent cartridge changes are part of the ownership plan; put them on your calendar.
Questions to ask before buying
- What does my water actually contain, and which problem am I solving?
- Is the exact model certified to the NSF/ANSI standard for that concern? Check its listing.
- How often are filters changed, and what will that take over a few years?
- Who installs it, and who do I call if it leaks?
- What does the written warranty cover?
