Why spots still happen
Softening lowers calcium and magnesium, but it does not remove everything dissolved. The City's 2025 report lists total dissolved solids at 194 ppm and sodium at 30.6 ppm, and any dissolved mineral can leave a mark when a drop dries in the sun. CSID intentionally blends 10 to 15 percent bypass water back into its RO water to raise alkalinity and hardness to desirable drinking water levels, so its water is not mineral-free either.
Where it shows
- Glass shower doors and mirrors.
- Dishwasher glasses.
- Faucet aerators and shower heads.
- Windows, cars and pool tile hit by sprinklers, especially from an irrigation well, which no provider treats.
Free fixes first
- Squeegee shower glass after use.
- Use a dishwasher rinse aid.
- Soak aerators and shower heads in white vinegar.
- Re-aim sprinklers away from windows and cars.
Measure before buying
Jorge measures hardness and dissolved solids at your tap. High hardness points to a softener. Low hardness with moderate dissolved solids points to habits and maybe RO for drinking glasses. Outdoor spots from sprinklers point to the irrigation source.
Softener vs. conditioner
- Ion-exchange softener: removes hardness minerals; reduces spotting and scale; uses salt and a drain.
- Salt-free conditioner: aims to reduce scale formation; usually does not prevent spots on glass.
See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener and softeners in Coral Springs.
Scale in equipment
Scale in water heaters, coffee makers and ice machines shortens equipment life. For Coral Springs businesses running commercial dishwashers or ice machines, a softening plant sized from a test is often the practical answer. See softener cost in Coral Springs.
Provider by provider
- City water: lime-softened; spotting on glass is usually from remaining dissolved solids. Test hardness before buying a softener.
- CSID water: membrane-treated with some minerals blended back; heavy scale is uncommon, but some residue on glass is normal.
- NSID water: nanofiltration and RO; similar to CSID.
- Irrigation well: untreated; the most likely source of spots on windows, cars and pool tile.
Not sure who your provider is? Your water bill names it, and the City of Coral Springs Water Districts page has a map of all four service areas.
If you run a Coral Springs business with a commercial dishwasher or ice machine, scale is more than cosmetic; it affects equipment. In that case, the test result decides whether a softening plant is justified, and it is sized for the equipment rather than for spots on glass.
