What the Orr plant already does
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says water from the Alexander Orr, Jr. plant "receives lime treatment to reduce hardness" before it is disinfected and filtered. The report's data tables do not list a hardness figure for the main system, so the honest way to know your number is to measure it at your tap.
Plant softening reduces hardness; it does not remove it entirely. Some homes still see spots on shower glass, especially where water evaporates, as on a car or a sunny window. Whether that justifies a softener is a judgment call best made with a number.
When a softener is worth it in Cutler Bay
- A measured hardness that bothers you: spots, crusty aerators, scale on the heater element.
- A private well: untreated Biscayne Aquifer water is usually harder than WASD's treated water. See well water in Cutler Bay.
- Businesses: restaurants, laundries, car washes, gyms and schools along US-1 and Old Cutler Road where water heaters, dishwashers or ice machines run all day.
How ion exchange works
An ion-exchange softener passes water through resin beads that trade calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. When the resin is full, the unit regenerates with brine and flushes the hardness to the drain. A softener does not remove chloramine; that is a filter's job. If you want both, they work as two stages. See softener vs. filter and salt-free conditioner vs. ion exchange.
Practical details for a Cutler Bay install
- Drain: regeneration needs a legal drain point near the unit.
- Placement: garage or utility area, out of direct sun when possible.
- Sodium: WASD lists sodium at 33 ppm on the main system. A softener adds some sodium in proportion to the hardness removed; potassium is an alternative, and many households keep an unsoftened kitchen tap or an RO for drinking.
- Programming: metered regeneration uses salt based on actual water use rather than the calendar.
Businesses
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for hotels, restaurants, schools, laundries, car washes, offices and gyms. Sizing follows daily water volume and the equipment you are protecting. Jorge tests on site and explains whether the hardness at your meter supports a softener before quoting.
