Plant RO vs. home RO
| City RO plant | Under-sink RO | |
|---|---|---|
| Treats | Floridan Aquifer water (3.0 MGD) | Your kitchen's drinking water |
| After treatment | Blended with other processes, then chloraminated | Delivered straight to your faucet |
| Chloramine | Added after | Reduced by the carbon stage |
So the water at your tap is a blend, plus disinfectant. Home RO finishes the job for the water you drink.
Stages
- Sediment catches particles, useful around the city's annual hydrant flushing.
- Carbon reduces chloramine (2.6 ppm running average in 2025) to protect the membrane.
- RO membrane lowers total dissolved solids.
- Alkaline adds minerals back for taste.
- Faucet dedicated at the sink.
Home RO also helps during the yearly free chlorination weeks, when the carbon stage handles free chlorine instead of chloramine and the sediment stage catches any particles stirred up by hydrant flushing.
Condos and Century Village
Deerfield Beach has many condo residents, including large communities like Century Village. Under-sink RO needs only cabinet space, a cold line and a drain connection. Check association rules on plumbing work before installation.
Specific contaminants need certification
RO models are certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for the contaminants listed on each model's certification. For lead, PFAS or fluoride, look up the exact model's listing. Living Water's systems aren't presented as removing a specific contaminant without that check.
Before you buy
- Which carbon stage handles chloramine, and when is it changed?
- Tank or tankless? See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Faucet: existing hole or new drilling?
- Fridge or ice maker line?
- How much water goes to drain per gallon produced?
- How should the system be restarted after months away?
Living with RO
- Filter reminders: put change dates on a calendar; the chloramine pre-filter is the one not to stretch.
- Seasonal homes: flush stored water when you return.
- Fridge line: connecting the ice maker gives you RO ice too.
- Drain water: RO sends some water to drain as part of how it works; ask the ratio for the model quoted.
