The job here is chloramines
The City of Fort Lauderdale's 2025 Water Quality Report says its water is softened, filtered, aerated and cleaned at the plants, then disinfected with chloramines. Chloramines are meant to stay in the water through the pipes. A whole-home system removes them where the water enters your house.
Living Water's city water systems use Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring equipment, which Living Water describes as removing chlorine and chloramine. See the city water system page.
Installing on a coastal home
Many Fort Lauderdale houses, especially along the canals and near the beach, have the main line and shutoff outside. For an outdoor installation, Jorge looks at:
- A protected spot away from direct sun, sprinklers and pool equipment splash.
- Salt air near the water, which makes protected placement and easy service access more important.
- Clearance to replace media or cartridges later without crawling behind hedges.
- Room for a bypass valve, so water keeps flowing during service.
Older homes and renovations
Neighborhoods like Victoria Park and Rio Vista include older homes that have been renovated over the years, sometimes with additions plumbed separately. Jorge confirms that the system will be installed where it treats every fixture, including guest suites, pool baths and outdoor showers you want covered. If you are planning a renovation, installing filtration during the project is often simpler.
The city has also published a lead service line inventory at ftlcity.info/serviceline. Home plumbing is separate; for a documented lead result at your tap, a certified lab is the right tool. Whole-home filters are about taste and odor, and any contaminant reduction depends on the exact model's NSF/ANSI certification.
Condos: usually not, but there is an option
In the oceanfront and downtown condo towers, the building controls the main line, so a whole-home system is not usually possible. An under-sink RO system gives you filtered drinking water inside your unit instead. Compare whole-house vs. under-sink filters.
Before you choose
- Designed for chloramine, not only chlorine.
- Sized to your household's water use and bathrooms.
- Certified for any specific contaminant you care about, model by model.
- Maintenance schedule in writing.
- Do you need a softener too? Often not on Fort Lauderdale city water; see water softeners in Fort Lauderdale.
