What changed in Hollywood
According to the city's fluoridation page, Florida's governor signed SB 700 on May 15, 2025, banning the addition of fluoride to public drinking water effective July 1. The Department of Public Utilities stopped fluoridation and said taste, odor and water quality would not be affected. Before that, the city's 2023 report listed fluoride near 0.74 parts per million; the 2025 report shows 0.12 parts per million in July 2025.
Why some fluoride remains
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. Stopping the additive does not mean zero; it means whatever occurs naturally in the treated water. Your tap may differ slightly depending on the blend of Biscayne and Floridan Aquifer water the plant produces.
Reading the numbers
Fluoride in the city reports is shown in parts per million (ppm). The state limit is 4.0 ppm. Before the ban, utilities that fluoridated generally targeted about 0.7 ppm, which matches the city's older reports. After July 1, 2025, what remains is natural fluoride from the source water and treatment, which is why the newest number is lower. Your own tap may be a little different, and a lab test can measure it precisely if it matters to you.
How fluoride is reduced at home
- Reverse osmosis is a common, well-established method for reducing fluoride at a drinking tap.
- Activated alumina and some specialty media are other options.
- Standard carbon filters, pitchers and fridge filters are generally not designed for fluoride.
Whichever you consider, confirm the exact model's certification listing includes fluoride reduction.
We stay neutral
Whether you want more or less fluoride is your decision, and questions about fluoride and health belong with your dentist or doctor. The city itself suggests that residents seeking fluoride consult their healthcare provider about options such as toothpaste. Our job is to explain what is in your water and what each system does.
Where RO fits
Living Water's under-sink alkaline RO systems use a multi-stage design with a membrane and a remineralization stage. If fluoride reduction is the reason you are buying, ask to see the specific model's performance data and listing. See under-sink RO in Hollywood and choosing a drinking water system.
