The choices compared
| Option | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher | Chlorine taste on a small scale | Small volume, frequent cartridge changes |
| Fridge filter | Cold water and ice | Small carbon cartridge; check each claim's certification |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Dedicated tap with membrane and carbon stages, minerals added back | Cabinet space, scheduled filter and membrane changes, some water to drain |
| Whole-home filter | Chlorine taste and odor at every tap and shower | Not a replacement for drinking-water treatment like RO |
Homestead-specific factors
- Disinfectant: HPS Water uses chlorine, which carbon reduces readily, so even simple filters help with taste. See chlorine filters in Homestead.
- Fluoride: the city stopped fluoridation in June 2025; natural fluoride remains. RO is a common reduction method. See fluoride filters.
- PFAS: the city publishes UCMR5 PFAS results. Only models certified to NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 for PFOA/PFOS reduction should be trusted for that claim. See PFAS filters.
- Lead: the city's report says lead in drinking water comes mainly from service lines and home plumbing, and that a filter certified by an ANSI-accredited certifier can reduce lead. Check the model's listing for lead.
Matching it to your household
- Apartment or newer townhome: under-sink RO, after checking lease or association rules.
- Single-family home with kids: RO for drinking, cooking and bottles; maybe whole-home filtration for showers.
- Redland or rural property on a well: treat the well first, then add RO at the kitchen. See well water treatment.
- Small office or gym: Living Water's RO systems are designed for offices and gyms too.
Questions for any seller
- What exact model, and which NSF/ANSI listings back each claim?
- How often is each filter or membrane replaced, and what does it cost to maintain?
- Can I taste the water before deciding?
- Is the quote itemized for equipment, installation and upkeep?
To compare with what you spend now, use the bottled water vs. RO calculator.
