What your utility uses
NMB Water: its 2025 Water Quality Report lists chloramines as the disinfectant residual monitored across the distribution system, within the regulatory maximum of 4 ppm. Miami-Dade WASD: its Water Quality Report explains that ammonia is added to combine with chlorine and form chloramine. Opa-locka-area customers receive county-supplied water. So nearly every Miami Gardens tap carries chloramine most of the year.
The yearly free-chlorine switch
For about two weeks a year the utilities switch to free chlorine and flush hydrants to clean the distribution system. WASD's 2025 switch ran October 13 to 26; NMB's newsletter describes the Norwood plant doing the same. Expect a stronger chlorine smell and occasional cloudy or discolored water during that time. A filter that handles chloramine handles free chlorine too.
Why plain carbon can struggle
Standard activated carbon handles free chlorine quickly. Chloramine reacts more slowly, so it needs more contact time and often a different media, usually catalytic carbon. A pitcher or small faucet filter rated only for chlorine may leave much of the chloramine smell behind, especially in the shower where water moves fast. Our chloramine filter guide goes into detail.
Certification to look for
- NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic claims, including chlorine and chloramine reduction for taste and odor. Check that the listing names chloramine specifically, not only chlorine.
- Check the exact model in the certifier's listing, with the rated flow and capacity.
- For drinking-water RO systems, NSF/ANSI 58 covers performance claims.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chlorine and chloramine; ask Jorge for the documentation on the specific unit quoted.
How to tell if your current filter is keeping up
Many Miami Gardens kitchens already have a pitcher, a faucet-mount filter or a refrigerator filter. A simple check: fill one glass straight from the tap and one from your filter, let both reach room temperature, and smell them side by side. If the filtered glass still has that pool-like note, the filter is either not rated for chloramine or is past its capacity. Shower water is harder to judge by smell alone because heat releases more of the odor. Jorge can measure total chlorine before and after your existing filter during the visit, which tells you in numbers whether it is doing its job and saves you from replacing something that works.
Whole-home or point-of-use?
| Option | Treats | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Whole-home catalytic carbon system | Every tap and shower | Houses where the shower smell bothers you |
| Under-sink RO with carbon pre-filters | One kitchen faucet | Drinking and cooking water; apartments |
| Shower filter | One shower | Short-term fix; check chloramine rating |
