What changed in 2025
- NMB Water says it stopped adding fluoride during treatment effective June 9, 2025. Its 2022 newsletter had described fluoridation as part of treatment at the Norwood plant.
- Miami-Dade WASD stopped effective May 29, 2025, after the Board of County Commissioners directed it to end fluoridation (Resolution R-370-25).
- State law: Chapter 2025-22, Laws of Florida (SB 700), effective July 1, 2025, prohibits additives in public water systems that do not meet the law's definition of a "water quality additive."
Both utilities note that trace amounts of naturally occurring fluoride remain in the water.
How to see the level in your water
Fluoride is listed in each utility's annual Water Quality Report. Because the change happened mid-2025, the report covering 2025 may reflect part of the year before and part after. Check the footnotes and testing dates. If you want a number for your own tap, a lab test is the most reliable route.
Which filters reduce fluoride
| Method | Fluoride reduction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse osmosis | Commonly used for it | Look for a model certified under NSF/ANSI 58 with a fluoride claim. |
| Activated alumina | Designed for it | Specialty media; performance depends on pH and contact time. |
| Standard carbon pitcher or fridge filter | Generally not designed for it | Good for taste and chlorine; check the listing. |
| Whole-home carbon | Not designed for it | Aimed at chloramine taste and odor. |
Alkaline RO and fluoride
Living Water's under-sink alkaline RO systems are multi-stage reverse osmosis units with a remineralization stage. RO membranes are a common method for reducing dissolved minerals, including fluoride. Ask Jorge for the certification documents of the exact model so you can confirm what claims it carries. See under-sink RO in Miami Gardens.
Do you need whole-home fluoride treatment?
Usually not. Most people who want lower fluoride care about the water they drink and cook with, not shower water. Treating every gallon that enters the house for fluoride takes specialized equipment and is rarely necessary for that goal. A point-of-use RO system at the kitchen sink is the more focused and practical approach. If you have a private well, fluoride levels depend on the aquifer, so a lab test comes first.
A neutral note
This page does not take a position on fluoride for health. People choose to reduce it, or to keep it, for their own reasons. Questions about dental care belong with your dentist; questions about the water belong with your utility. We focus on the equipment and what it is certified to do.
