How the stages work
- Sediment pre-filter catches particles, including sediment stirred up during WASD's yearly hydrant flushing.
- Carbon pre-filter reduces chloramine and chlorine to protect the membrane.
- RO membrane reduces dissolved salts and minerals.
- Post-filter and alkaline stage polish taste and add minerals back.
- Dedicated faucet on the sink.
Each stage protects the next, which is why the order matters.
Why it fits Miami Springs water
The Hialeah and Preston plants soften and air-strip the water before adding chloramine; WASD's 2025 report lists chloramine averaging 2.5 ppm and sodium up to 33 ppm in the main system. With the heavy lifting done at the plant, an RO's job here is taste and dissolved solids at the one tap you drink from.
RO water often tastes noticeably different from the regular tap, which is the point: most people use it for everything they drink and cook, and leave the regular faucet for washing.
Older kitchens
Kitchens in older Miami Springs homes vary a lot: tight sink cabinets, older shut-off valves, tile or stone countertops. Jorge checks:
- Cabinet space, and whether a disposal shares it.
- The shut-off valve and supply line condition.
- The drain connection.
- Where the faucet goes, using a spare sink hole if there is one.
- Water pressure, which affects RO output.
Who uses it and for what
- Drinking water, coffee, tea and ice without the chloramine taste.
- Cooking water.
- Pets' bowls.
- Baby formula preparation, following your pediatrician's guidance.
- Replacing bottled water.
Renters should get the owner's approval first; RO usually stays inside the sink cabinet.
For an office, size the system to the number of people and whether it feeds a coffee maker or ice machine.
Limits and certification
RO treats only its faucet. For any specific contaminant, the exact model must be certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for it. RO is a common way to reduce fluoride; WASD stopped adding fluoride in June 2025, though natural fluoride remains. Read alkaline vs. standard RO to compare styles.
Tankless models save cabinet space but usually need an outlet; see tankless vs. tank RO.
Upkeep
Each stage has its own replacement interval; pre-filters protect the membrane, so keeping them on time matters most. RO sends some water to the drain, which shows on your WASD bill. The schedule is listed on your itemized quote after the free test. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
Ask whether filters are standard sizes or proprietary, and where you'll buy them later. If the test shows you don't need RO, Jorge will say so.
