Driver one: is it needed?
Oakland Park's report describes lime softening at Fort Lauderdale's plant; Broward County uses lime and ferric chloride; and Fort Lauderdale's new Prospect Lake plant uses nanofiltration and ion exchange. A tap test gives the number that decides. If it is low, Jorge will tell you to skip the softener.
Driver two: who is using the water
| Property | What sets the size |
|---|---|
| House | Hardness, household size, bathrooms |
| Brewery or restaurant | Brewing and kitchen equipment, daily gallons |
| Laundry, salon or gym | Hot water volume |
| Warehouse or shop | Process water and hours |
| Private well | Raw hardness and iron |
Salt use deserves a direct question. A softener set for hardness higher than your water actually has will regenerate more often than needed and use more salt. Setting it from a measured number avoids that.
Driver three: equipment
- Resin capacity and tank size.
- Control valve and how it decides when to regenerate.
- Single tank, which pauses briefly to regenerate, or twin tank for round-the-clock soft water.
- Pre-treatment if the water also has iron or sediment.
Driver four: installation and upkeep
Installation depends on drain access, a bypass, power for the valve and space for the brine tank. Upkeep means salt, service and eventual resin replacement. Ask how often it regenerates at your hardness, since that drives salt use. See water softener cost in Florida.
Questions that keep the quote honest
- What hardness was measured, and where?
- How was capacity calculated from it?
- How much salt will it use at that setting?
- What does a service visit include, and what does the written warranty cover?
A softener sold without a measured hardness number is a guess, and on softened city water that guess is easy to get wrong.
Downtime and growth
For a business, the cost of running out of soft water during service can matter more than the equipment itself. A twin-tank system costs more up front but never pauses. Ask too whether the system can be expanded if your business grows, so you are not replacing it in a few years. For a house, the more likely recommendation is no softener at all.
