PLANTATION · HARD WATER SPOTS

Hard Water Spots & Scale in Plantation

Plantation's city water is softened with membranes, so heavy scale is uncommon on city taps. Light spots on glass shower doors still happen, because any water leaves some dissolved minerals behind when it dries. Heavier scale usually points to irrigation or well water, or to heat in water heaters and appliances. A free hardness and dissolved-solids test shows which, before you buy a softener you may not need.

Why spots appear on soft water

Softened water has little calcium and magnesium, but it still carries some dissolved minerals; the city's 2025 report lists sodium at 14 ppm, for example. When droplets evaporate on glass, they leave a faint film. That is different from the crusty white scale of hard water, and the fix is usually how surfaces dry, not new equipment.

Where real scale shows up

  • Sprinkler overspray on windows, cars and screen enclosures, if the lawn uses an irrigation well.
  • Pool tile lines, which concentrate minerals as water evaporates and is topped off.
  • Water heaters and coffee makers, where heat drives minerals out of solution.
  • A private well, which does not go through the city's membranes.

Softener or conditioner

  • An ion-exchange softener removes hardness, using salt, a drain and power.
  • A salt-free conditioner changes how minerals behave but leaves them in the water.

On Plantation city water, neither is usually needed for spots. See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener and water softeners in Plantation.

Appliances and pool equipment

Dishwashers, coffee makers and ice machines can still collect mineral film over time, especially with high heat. Using the manufacturer's descaling routine is usually enough on soft city water. Pool owners should watch the waterline tile and balance chemistry; pool scale has more to do with evaporation and pool chemistry than with the city's tap water. If you top off with irrigation well water, minerals and iron from that well can show up in the pool too.

Cleaning and prevention

  • Squeegee shower glass after each use and run the bathroom fan.
  • Use a mild vinegar solution on fixtures, testing special finishes first.
  • Point sprinkler heads away from windows and screens.
  • Dry cars after washing rather than letting them air-dry.

What the test shows

Jorge measures hardness and total dissolved solids at your tap. If hardness is low, as expected on membrane-softened city water, he tells you plainly and suggests the simple fixes. If it is high, he explains why and what a softener would involve, with an itemized quote.

Common questions

Is Plantation water hard?

City water is softened with membranes that reject calcium and magnesium. Wells and irrigation water can be harder.

Why do I get spots if my water is soft?

Any water leaves minerals when it dries. Squeegeeing and ventilation help more than a softener on soft water.

Will a softener stop shower door spots?

On already-soft city water, probably not much. A test shows whether hardness is involved.

Why are my windows spotted near the sprinklers?

Irrigation water, especially from a well, can carry more minerals than city water.

Does pool scale mean my tap water is hard?

Not necessarily. Pool water concentrates minerals as it evaporates, and well water used for top-offs adds more.

Is the hardness test free?

Yes. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
