Why chloramine is the target here
The City of Pompano Beach softens its Biscayne Aquifer water by lime and membrane treatment, then adds chloramine to keep it disinfected through about 270 miles of pipe. The city FAQ puts typical hardness at 1 to 2 grains, so most homes are not fighting heavy scale. What reaches every shower and washing machine is the disinfectant residual, which the 2025 report measured from 0.61 to 4.0 ppm across samples.
Living Water's whole-home city water systems, built on Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring equipment, are described as removing chloramine and chlorine. Ask for the exact model and its documentation, and match it to your test.
What a whole-home system changes, and what it doesn't
- Changes: chlorine and chloramine taste and smell at every tap, in showers and in laundry.
- Doesn't change: the fact that Pompano Beach water already meets drinking water standards. Filtration is about comfort and preference.
- Not the same as RO: a whole-home filter does not lower total dissolved solids the way reverse osmosis does. Many homes pair the two. See whole-house filtration vs. RO.
Sizing a system for a Pompano Beach home
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Bathrooms and peak flow | Too small a system drops pressure when two showers run. |
| Chloramine level at your tap | Determines media type and contact time. |
| Household size | Sets how fast media is used up. |
| Where the main line enters | Garage, side yard or utility closet changes the install. |
Older homes east of Federal Highway and newer ones out west can have very different plumbing layouts, so Jorge looks at the line before quoting.
Check your service line while you're at it
Pompano Beach Utilities says it has no utility-owned lead service lines, and its online Lead and Copper map lets you enter your address to see the recorded material on both the city side and the private side of your service line. It is a useful two-minute check before any plumbing work. A whole-home filter is not a lead treatment device; for lead, use a filter certified for lead reduction and check its listing.
When the bill comes from Broward County
If you live in a part of Pompano Beach served by Broward County Water and Wastewater Services, such as Pompano Highlands, your water comes from a different plant. Broward County's report says it softens with lime and ferric chloride and also disinfects with chloramines, so the same type of system usually applies, but Jorge tests your tap rather than assuming.
Installation and upkeep questions
A whole-home system usually goes on the main line after the meter and before the water heater, with a bypass valve so the house keeps water during service. Before you sign anything, ask:
- Where exactly will the tanks or housings sit, and is there shade and drainage there?
- Does the system backwash, and where does that water go?
- How long does the media last at your household's use and at the chloramine level measured at your tap?
- What is in writing about service visits and warranty?
Pompano Beach's occasional free chlorine maintenance periods don't change the equipment you need, but they are a good reminder that taste can vary through the year even when the system is working.
