Reading the clues
| What you see | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| Spots that wipe off | Mineral residue from drying |
| Crust on aerators that returns fast | Higher hardness; test it |
| Orange marks near sprinklers | Irrigation well iron |
| Salty film on outdoor glass | Ocean spray, not tap water |
What the plant does
The USD treats water with lime and polymer, a lime-softening process, then filters it. Its report lists sodium at 25.6 ppm (May 2023) but no hardness figure. Lime softening mainly lowers calcium hardness; some minerals always remain.
In practice, homeowners on lime-softened water usually see light spotting rather than thick crust. If you see heavy crust, the cause is more likely a well, an old water heater, or a fixture that has been accumulating scale for years before you moved in.
Softener or conditioner
- Ion-exchange softener: removes calcium and magnesium; uses salt.
- Salt-free conditioner: aims to reduce scale formation without removing minerals.
See salt-free conditioner vs. softener.
Simple fixes
- Squeegee glass after showers.
- Vinegar soaks for aerators.
- Rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- RO water for coffee makers.
These cost little and often solve the complaint without equipment, which is worth trying before buying a softener for spotting alone. For dishwashers, check that the rinse aid dispenser is full and the detergent is right for your load size; cloudy glasses are often a detergent issue rather than a water one.
Cars and boats
Washing in the sun leaves spots as water evaporates fast. Wash in shade and dry right away. For boats, a final rinse with city water rather than well water avoids iron marks. See iron stains.
Near the marinas and the Port of Palm Beach area, many owners rinse boats and trailers often. Salt spray dries into a white film that looks like hard water spotting but is not. A freshwater rinse soon after use, then drying, works better than any household water treatment.
