What changed in 2025
According to WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report, the Alexander Orr, Jr., John E. Preston and Hialeah plants discontinued adding fluoride as of June 6, 2025. That followed County Resolution R-370-25, approved May 6, 2025, and Florida Senate Bill 700, signed May 15, 2025 with an effective date of July 1, 2025. The report's 2025 table still shows a highest fluoride value from earlier in the year, when fluoride was being added.
Why some fluoride remains
Fluoride occurs naturally in the soil and in Biscayne Aquifer water. WASD reports main-system levels of about 0.1 to 0.3 ppm after fluoridation stopped. Removing it entirely isn't something the plant does, and it isn't required.
If you want to reduce it
- Reverse osmosis is a common method for reducing fluoride at the kitchen tap. See under-sink RO in South Miami.
- Standard carbon filters generally are not designed for fluoride.
- For any claim, the model must be certified for fluoride reduction (NSF/ANSI 58 for RO); check the exact listing.
What else RO changes
An RO system that reduces fluoride also reduces other dissolved minerals, which is why Living Water's systems include an alkaline stage that adds minerals back for taste. RO treats only the faucet it's connected to; shower and laundry water stay the same. If fluoride is your only concern, a single kitchen RO is usually the whole solution.
How to check your current level
WASD's annual report gives the main-system range. For your own tap or well, a certified lab can measure fluoride. Jorge's free visit covers the other factors that matter for picking a system: chloramine, hardness, pH and dissolved solids.
A neutral note
We don't take a position on fluoride. Some households want less, some want it for their teeth; talk to your dentist or doctor about your family's needs. Our job is to tell you what is in your water and what equipment does.
If you want a professional opinion on fluoride for children, your pediatric dentist can tell you whether a supplement or other approach makes sense now that only natural fluoride remains.
Private wells
Fluoride in a private well is whatever the groundwater carries. A lab test gives you the number. See well water in South Miami.
The Florida Department of Health's private well guidance recommends regular lab testing of drinking wells; ask the lab to include fluoride if it matters to you.
