Start with the hardness test
WASD's 2025 report says Orr plant water is lime-treated to reduce hardness, but it does not publish one hardness number per home. Your tap test decides whether a softener is worth paying for at all. Skipping an unneeded softener is the biggest saving available.
On a private well, hardness is not reduced by any utility, so the result is often higher and the sizing changes.
Cost drivers when you do need one
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Measured hardness | Higher hardness needs more capacity |
| Water use | More people or a business means a larger unit |
| Drain location | Brine needs a proper drain; distance adds plumbing |
| Septic or sewer | South Miami still has many septic properties; discharge planning may change the setup |
| Salt | An ongoing cost tied to hardness and use |
Businesses
Restaurants, salons, gyms and laundries may need a commercial ion-exchange softening plant sized to equipment demand. Those quotes depend on flow rate, equipment type and hours of operation.
Restaurants with dishwashers and ice machines, salons with washing stations and gyms with showers each have different peaks, so a commercial quote is built around how and when water is used, not just the size of the building.
What you might save by not buying one
A softener is a long-term commitment: salt, regeneration water and periodic service for years. If your measured hardness is modest, putting that money toward chloramine filtration or a kitchen RO may solve more of what you actually notice. If your hardness is high, especially on a well, a properly sized softener pays its way by protecting the water heater and fixtures. The test sorts out which case you're in.
Questions to ask any installer
- What hardness did you measure, and how did you size the unit?
- How much salt will it use, and how often does it regenerate?
- Where will the brine discharge on my property?
- What is covered by the warranty, in writing?

A quote that skips the hardness number, or sizes the unit without asking how many people live in the house, deserves a second look.
