Signs of hard water
- White spots on shower glass, dishes and cars.
- Crust on faucet aerators and shower heads.
- Soap and shampoo that do not lather well.
- Popping or rumbling in the water heater, and slower hot water.
- Scale in kettles and coffee makers.
Black fixtures and glass shower doors show these marks first.
Why it is common here
Sunrise lime- or membrane-softens its water and Cooper City membrane-softens all of its supply to remove hardness before delivery. Ranches wells skip that step, so the minerals the aquifer holds reach every fixture. Outdoors, sprinklers fed by the well leave spots on windows, cars and dark surfaces.
Hardness varies by well, depth and location, so testing your own water is the only way to size a softener correctly.
What Jorge tests
Hardness, iron, pH and dissolved solids. Iron matters because it changes the treatment order: iron can foul a softener, so it is often handled first. On Sunrise water, hardness is usually low, and spots have other causes.
Testing at the kitchen and at an outdoor spigot on the same well shows whether indoor and outdoor spots share a cause.
Softener vs. conditioner
- Ion-exchange softener: removes hardness minerals; the reliable way to stop hardness spotting and scale.
- Salt-free conditioner: changes how minerals behave so they stick less, but does not remove them, and is not designed for iron.
See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener and water softeners in Southwest Ranches.
On a well with iron, plan the iron stage before the softener so the softener keeps its capacity. See softener vs. filter.
Protecting equipment
Scale shortens the life of water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and anything that heats water. On a hard-water well, treating the water before it reaches these appliances protects them. Existing heater scale is a plumbing job to flush.
Ice makers and coffee machines are especially sensitive; descaling them regularly helps while you decide on treatment.
