Why the last stop matters in Surfside
The Town of Surfside delivers WASD water through its own pipes. In a building, water then goes through booster pumps, which the Town's Public Works guide names as one cause of cloudy water from trapped air, and often through storage tanks and long risers. Each step is the building's equipment, not the Town's. Treating water at the faucet means you drink what your RO produces regardless of what happens upstream.
What RO changes
- Chloramine taste: handled by carbon stages suited to chloramine.
- Dissolved solids: the membrane holds back most of them.
- Taste: an alkaline stage adds minerals back so water does not taste flat.
RO treats one faucet, sends some water to drain, and any specific contaminant claim belongs to that exact model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing.
Condo checklist before installation
- Read your association's rules on plumbing alterations and contractor requirements.
- Ask management whether a certificate of insurance is needed and when work is allowed.
- Confirm a working cold-water shutoff under the sink.
- Choose the faucet location; drilling stone countertops takes care.
- Decide on a refrigerator or ice-maker line.
- Add a leak stop or detector; in a building, leaks travel to the unit below.
Chloramine and filter schedules
RO membranes need protection from chlorine-based disinfectants. WASD's main system carried chloramine at 2.5 ppm in 2025, and chloramine is slower to break down in ordinary carbon than free chlorine. Ask which pre-filter is used and how often it is changed at your water use. During WASD's yearly two-week free chlorine period the same pre-filter handles chlorine easily.
Snowbirds and rentals
If the unit sits empty for months, close the RO supply valve before you leave. When you return, open it, let the tank fill and drain once, and check the filter schedule. For rentals, leave the schedule inside the cabinet door and agree on who changes filters.
Tank or tankless in a small kitchen
Many Surfside condo kitchens have tight cabinets, sometimes shared with a garbage disposal and dishwasher lines. A tankless RO saves space; a tank model stores water ready at the faucet. Both work on Town water. Compare in tankless vs. tank RO, and ask Jorge to look at your cabinet before deciding.
Get a test at your tap
Jorge tests at your kitchen sink and tells you whether RO fits. See the compact alkaline RO and alkaline vs. standard RO, then call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
