Hardness first
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says that, in general, homes north of SW 8 Street receive water from the Hialeah and John E. Preston plants, while the Alexander Orr, Jr. plant serves homes south of SW 8 Street. Sweetwater City Hall, at 500 SW 109 Avenue, sits north of SW 8 Street, and the city's own history describes the state university as lying to its south. If your address is right along Tamiami Trail, WASD can confirm which plant normally feeds your street.
Both of those plants soften the water. A hardness reading at your tap tells you whether what remains is worth treating.
Sizing factors
| Factor | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Hardness level | Resin capacity and regeneration frequency |
| People in the home or daily business use | Tank size |
| Peak flow | Valve and tank selection |
| Chloramine treatment wanted too | Adds a carbon stage |
Commercial softeners
Sweetwater's shopping centers hold restaurants, bakeries, cafes and laundromats. For them, a softener is sized to the busiest day, not the average one, and often protects water heaters, dishwashers and ice machines. Ask how capacity was calculated and how regeneration fits operating hours.
Installation and running costs
- Drain access for regeneration water.
- Power for the control valve.
- A protected location.
- Salt use, which depends on hardness and water use.
- Water used during regeneration.

When not to buy one
If your tap test shows low hardness, skip the softener and put the money toward what you actually notice, usually chloramine. A softener sized for a problem you do not have still uses salt and water every time it regenerates. Jorge will tell you if your numbers do not justify one.
Softener or salt-free conditioner
Conditioners change how minerals behave instead of removing them, so they work differently on spots and scale. Living Water offers ion-exchange softening plants. Compare in salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
