Reading the Village's hardness numbers
100 to 120 mg/L is about 6 to 7 grains per gallon. The Village's FAQ describes water at 100 mg/L or less as soft and 200 mg/L or more as hard. Your tap may differ a little from the average, since the finished water blends filtered surficial groundwater with RO-treated Floridan water. Jorge measures it in both units so you can compare with the Village's figures.
Hardness can drift a little over the year as the plant's blend of surficial and Floridan water changes with demand and maintenance. If you measure once and get a number near the top of the range, that is still a moderate result. The decision is less about a single number and more about how much scale and spotting bothers you, and which appliances you want to protect.
When a softener earns its keep in Tequesta
- You see white scale on fixtures and glass doors that cleaning habits do not control.
- You have a tank water heater, boiler or espresso machine you want to protect.
- You run a restaurant, laundry, gym or office where equipment scaling costs downtime.
- You draw from a private well; see well water in Tequesta.
When it does not
If your main complaint is a chlorine smell, a pool-like taste or dry-feeling skin, the cause is the disinfectant, and a softener does nothing for it. That is a filter's job. See softener vs. filter in Tequesta.
Many Tequesta homeowners who ask about softeners are really reacting to the stronger chlorine taste during the Village's yearly free-chlorine period. That passes when the plant returns to chloramine, and a filter rated for both handles it either way.
How ion exchange works
Resin beads trade calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. When the resin is loaded, the unit regenerates with brine and rinses to a drain. Metered valves regenerate based on actual water use, which matters with moderate hardness: a well-programmed unit regenerates less often and uses less salt.
A salt-free conditioner does not remove hardness; compare salt-free vs. ion exchange.
Before you buy
- Ask what hardness was measured at your tap.
- Ask how the capacity was chosen.
- Confirm a drain and outlet nearby.
- Ask about salt use per month at your use.
