Why RO at the kitchen sink
Wellington's utility already uses membranes for part of its own treatment, and is moving toward all-membrane nanofiltration. An under-sink RO applies a tighter membrane to just the water you drink. It also reduces the dissolved minerals and sodium that pass through municipal treatment; the village's 2025 report lists sodium at 37 ppm. The result is water with a clean, neutral taste for drinking, coffee, ice and cooking.
How the stages work
- Sediment pre-filter catches particles from pipes and fittings.
- Carbon pre-filters reduce chloramine and chlorine, which also protects the membrane.
- RO membrane separates dissolved solids from the water.
- Alkaline stage adds back minerals for taste and raises pH.
- Polishing filter before the dedicated faucet.
See the compact alkaline RO and compare in alkaline vs. standard RO.
Carbon stages and chloramine
Chloramine is slower to break down than free chlorine, so the carbon stages need to be the right type and changed on schedule. Wellington's chloramine readings in 2025 ranged from 0.21 to 4.4 ppm across samples. During the village's free chlorine maintenance, the same stages handle free chlorine.
Fitting it in a Wellington kitchen
- Space under the sink for the unit and, on tank models, the storage tank.
- A hole in the counter or sink deck for the faucet.
- A drain connection for the membrane's reject water.
- An optional line to the refrigerator's ice maker.
Granite and quartz counters may need a professional drill. Jorge checks all of this during the visit.
What RO is certified for
Reverse osmosis systems are certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for specific contaminants. If you are buying RO for a particular concern, such as PFAS or fluoride, check that the exact model's listing names that contaminant. See PFAS filters in Wellington and fluoride filters in Wellington.
Who it suits in Wellington
RO fits households that drink a lot of tap water, cook with it, or are tired of carrying bottled water home. It also suits renters and condo owners who cannot change the main plumbing, since it installs under one sink. If everyone in the house also dislikes the chloramine in the shower, pair it with whole-home filtration instead of adding more single-tap filters.
