Spots vs. scale
- Spots: faint white marks on shower glass, dishes and cars where water evaporated. Common even with softened water.
- Scale: hard, crusty buildup on faucets, showerheads, inside kettles and water heaters. A sign of real hardness somewhere.
If you mostly have spots, habits and rinse aids may do more than equipment.
Where heavier buildup comes from in Weston
- Irrigation spray from a lake, canal or well hitting windows, doors and cars.
- Pools and fountains, where evaporation concentrates minerals.
- Water heaters, where heat drops minerals out of solution.
- Private wells, which skip plant softening.
- Aerators and showerheads that have not been cleaned in years.
Softener vs. conditioner
| Ion-exchange softener | Salt-free conditioner | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes hardness | Yes | No; changes how minerals form scale |
| Evaporation spots | Reduced | Still likely |
| Needs | Salt, drain, power | Less upkeep |
On Weston city water, which is already softened at the plant, neither may be needed. See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Simple fixes that work
- Squeegee shower glass after each use.
- Use rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Redirect sprinkler heads away from glass, doors and screens.
- Soak aerators and showerheads in vinegar periodically.
- Have the water heater flushed on the manufacturer's schedule.
Bonaventure and businesses
Homes served directly by the City of Sunrise may be in a different service area; Sunrise's Southwest plant uses lime softening rather than membranes. Restaurants, gyms and laundries face scale inside equipment no matter how small the daily amount, and Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses where a test supports it. See water softeners in Weston.
Reading a hardness result
Hardness is reported in grains per gallon or in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. Jorge explains your number in plain words: low enough to ignore, or high enough that scale will keep forming in your water heater and fixtures. On membrane-softened Weston city water, the most common outcome is that no softener is needed, and the fix for spots is a squeegee and a sprinkler adjustment.
Measure first
Jorge tests hardness and total dissolved solids at your tap and tells you whether equipment would make a difference. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
