What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in non-stick coatings, stain- and water-resistant products, some food packaging and certain firefighting foams. They break down very slowly, which is why they are often called forever chemicals. EPA set drinking water limits for several PFAS in 2024 and has since proposed changes to parts of that rule; EPA's PFAS page has the current status.
Where to find data for Wilton Manors
- Wilton Manors' report: the 2025 edition lists regulated contaminants and disinfection byproducts but no PFAS results.
- EPA's UCMR 5 Data Finder: search for the City of Fort Lauderdale's system, which produces the water, and for Wilton Manors.
- Ask: Wilton Manors Utilities at (954) 390-2190, or Fort Lauderdale's Customer Service Center at (954) 828-8000.
The new plant
Fort Lauderdale says its Prospect Lake Clean Water Center, which uses nanofiltration and ion exchange and began supplying water in September 2026, is designed to give more flexibility to respond to evolving water quality standards and emerging contaminants. We do not speak for its PFAS results; ask the city, and watch for the next Water Quality Reports.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replace cartridges and membranes on schedule; claims apply only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. See how to verify PFAS reduction claims.
Reading results when you find them
UCMR 5 results are reported per water system and per compound, usually in parts per trillion or micrograms per liter, with a minimum reporting level below which a result shows as not detected. Compare detected values with EPA's current rules for PFOA, PFOS and the other regulated PFAS. Because Wilton Manors buys water from Fort Lauderdale, results for Fort Lauderdale's system describe the water before it enters the city's pipes, which is the relevant point for PFAS.
If you rent
Renters can use a certified pitcher or faucet filter whose listing includes PFOA and PFOS, and take it with them when they move.
Testing at your tap
PFAS testing needs a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free in-home screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS and pH, not PFAS. He can help you read the utility data and decide whether a lab test makes sense. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
