Why people move away from delivery
- Lifting, swapping and storing heavy jugs
- Running out between deliveries
- Keeping track of schedules, dispensers and deposits
- Wanting filtered water for cooking, coffee and ice, not only for drinking
- Wanting less plastic coming into the house
The alternatives compared
| Option | Coverage | Install | Upkeep | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pitcher filter | A few cups at a time | None | Frequent cartridge changes | Renters, light use |
| Faucet-mount filter | Kitchen tap | Screws onto faucet | Cartridge changes | Light to moderate use |
| Under-sink reverse osmosis | Dedicated drinking faucet | Under-sink installation | Filter and membrane changes | Families, offices, heavy use |
| Whole-home system | Every tap and shower | Main-line installation | Media or filter service | Chlorine or chloramine odor, scale, comfort |
Whatever you choose, check that the exact model is certified to the NSF/ANSI standard for the contaminants you care about. NSF's public database lets you search certified products by type and standard.
The Living Water option
Living Water's drinking-water system is a multi-stage alkaline reverse osmosis unit that installs under the sink with a dedicated faucet, for homes, offices, apartments and gyms. For homes that also want treated water in the shower and laundry, Living Water offers whole-home purification for city water. Equipment is by Puronics, a water treatment manufacturer since 1947, and financing is available through Living Water's financing partners.

South Florida considerations
Some utilities disinfect with chloramine, and some homes run on wells. Your utility's annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) lists what it tested for. A drinking-water system handles one tap; if the smell in the shower or scale on glass also bothers you, a whole-home system may be part of the answer. Condo and apartment owners should confirm building rules before plumbing changes.
Questions to ask before switching
- How many gallons do we use each week for drinking and cooking?
- Is there room under the sink and a spot for a second faucet?
- Which certification does the model carry, and for what?
- What is the filter and membrane schedule?
- Is the quote itemized? Use our cost calculator to compare with your delivery bill.
