Signs you have outgrown a pitcher
- Constant refilling and waiting
- Frequent cartridge changes that are easy to forget
- Wanting filtered water for pots, coffee makers and ice
- Concerns that start in the shower or laundry, not the glass
Alternatives compared
| Option | Install | Capacity | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Faucet-mount filter | Screws onto faucet | On demand, slower flow | May not fit pull-down faucets |
| Refrigerator filter | Built into the fridge | Fridge dispenser and ice | Change on the fridge maker's schedule |
| Under-sink reverse osmosis | Under the sink with its own faucet | On demand plus a storage tank or direct flow | Membrane plus pre and post filters |
| Whole-home system | Main water line | Every tap | Addresses shower and laundry too |
Check certifications on every option
Each product is certified model by model. NSF's public database lets you search certified drinking water treatment units by type (pitcher, faucet mount, plumbed-in and more) and by standard, including NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58 and 401. Confirm the exact model is certified for the specific contaminant you care about before relying on it.
The Living Water option
Living Water installs a multi-stage alkaline reverse osmosis system under the sink with a dedicated faucet, for homes, offices, apartments and gyms. For whole-home needs on city water, it offers whole-home purification that Living Water describes as removing chlorine and chloramine, plus ion-exchange softening for hard water. Equipment is by Puronics, a manufacturer since 1947. Financing is available through Living Water's financing partners.
How to decide in three steps
- Name the problem. Taste in the glass, odor in the shower, spots on glass doors, or stains from a well each point to a different kind of system.
- Test the water. A home test shows hardness, chlorine or chloramine and other basics, so you are not buying a fix for the wrong issue.
- Match the certification. Pick a model certified for that specific concern, then compare upkeep and installation. Our quote comparison guide lists what a written quote should include.
South Florida notes
Most South Florida homes are on city water, and some utilities disinfect with chloramine rather than chlorine; your utility's annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) says which. Renters and condo owners should check lease or association rules before plumbing work. If you have a private or irrigation well, test it separately; see city vs well water treatment.
