Why ownership cost matters as much as the install
Two systems can look similar on install day and cost very differently to run. One may need frequent cartridge changes; another may run on long-life media with occasional service. Knowing the yearly picture up front lets you compare fairly and budget honestly.
The yearly line items
| Line item | What drives it | Ask |
|---|---|---|
| Main media or cartridge | Media type, tank size, gallons treated, what is being reduced | How is the replacement interval estimated for my home? |
| Sediment pre-filter | Particles in the water, flow | How often, and can I change it myself? |
| Salt (if a softener is included) | Hardness, water use, valve settings | How much per month for my household? |
| Backwash or regeneration water | System design and schedule | How much water goes to drain per cycle? |
| Electricity | Control valve, any UV or pump | Does the unit need power, and how much? |
| Service visits | System complexity | What does a visit include and how often is it recommended? |
| Parts outside warranty | Age, use | What is covered, and for how long? |
Who handles each task
| Task | Often homeowner | Often technician |
|---|---|---|
| Sediment cartridge change | Yes, on many systems | If housings are hard to reach |
| Adding softener salt | Yes | Rarely |
| Media bed replacement | Rarely | Yes |
| Valve programming and checks | Basic settings | Diagnostics and repairs |
Ask which tasks apply to the system you are quoted and plan your time and budget around them.
Things that raise or lower the yearly cost
- Household size: more gallons treated means media works harder.
- Water chemistry: chloramine, for example, is a heavier load on media than chlorine alone. See chloramine in city water.
- Sizing: an undersized system needs service more often.
- Pre-filtration: a sediment stage can protect the main media.
- Skipping maintenance: it saves nothing; spent media stops doing its job and can lead to bigger repairs.
Offsets people weigh
Some households compare ownership costs against what they currently spend on bottled water, shower filters, or descaling products, and against wear on fixtures and water-using appliances from scale. Only you can put numbers on those for your home, but they belong in the comparison. For drinking water specifically, the bottled water vs. RO calculator lets you enter your own figures.
A checklist to bring to any quote
- List every consumable and its replacement interval for my home.
- Who does each replacement: me or a technician?
- What is in the maintenance plan, and is it optional?
- What happens if a part fails after warranty?
- How do I know when media is spent?
