The quote is only as good as the test behind it
A quote that was not based on testing your water is a guess. One company may assume hard water and include a softener; another may assume you only want better taste. Ask every company which results their recommendation is based on. Living Waters starts with a free in-home water test and explains the results before recommending anything.
Where quotes usually diverge
| Area | Quote A might... | Quote B might... |
|---|---|---|
| Sizing | Size for current use | Size for peak flow and more bathrooms |
| What is treated | Filter only | Filter plus softener plus drinking-water RO |
| Media | Standard carbon | Media rated for chloramine |
| Certification | No listing given | Model listed to an NSF/ANSI standard for specific claims |
| Install scope | Basic hookup | Bypass, new loop, drain, electrical, permit |
| Maintenance | Not mentioned | Schedule and first service included |
| Warranty | Equipment only | Equipment and labor |
Neither column is automatically right; the point is to see what you are actually comparing.
How to make quotes comparable
- Ask each company for the test results their design is based on.
- Ask for the exact model numbers, then look them up yourself.
- For any contaminant claim, ask which NSF/ANSI standard and check the model's listing.
- Ask for installation scope in writing: what is included, what is extra.
- Ask for the yearly ownership costs: media, filters, salt, service.
- Compare warranty terms for equipment and labor separately.
Our guide on how to compare water treatment quotes goes deeper.
Red flags in any quote
- No water test, or a test with no explanation of results.
- Claims that a product "removes everything" or makes water "safe" without naming a certification.
- Equipment described only by a brand or nickname, with no model number.
- Pressure to sign the same day.
- No mention of maintenance or ongoing costs.
Ownership cost belongs in the comparison
The install figure is only part of the cost. A system with a lower install quote may need more frequent media or cartridge changes, more salt, or more service visits. Ask every company for the yearly line items, then compare the full picture over the years you expect to own the system. See annual ownership cost.
Install conditions that legitimately change cost
Some differences are real. A main line that is hard to reach, an exterior install that needs protection from sun and weather, no nearby drain, or a municipality that requires a permit all add legitimate cost. A good quote explains these rather than hiding them. See also whole-home filtration cost and water softener cost.
