The stages you will replace
| Stage | Job | Typical replacement pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Sediment pre-filter | Catches particles | Most frequent |
| Carbon pre-filter(s) | Reduces chlorine or chloramine before the membrane | Frequent; depends on disinfectant load |
| RO membrane | Core reduction stage | Least frequent; depends on water and pre-filter care |
| Post-carbon | Final taste polish | Per manufacturer schedule |
| Remineralization (alkaline models) | Adds minerals back for taste | Per manufacturer schedule |
Exact intervals come from the manufacturer and your use; ask for them in writing.
What makes replacements cost more or less
- Number of stages: more stages, more cartridges.
- Cartridge format: quick-change cartridges are easier to swap; some models need specific parts.
- Your water: more sediment or a heavier disinfectant load can shorten pre-filter life.
- Household use: more gallons, more frequent changes.
- DIY or service: doing it yourself saves a visit; a service visit can include sanitizing and a check of the whole system.
- Warranty conditions: some warranties require approved replacement parts.
Signs a filter is due
Do not wait for taste to tell you. Follow the schedule. But between changes, watch for:
- Slower flow from the RO faucet.
- A change in taste or odor.
- The tank taking longer to refill.
- A filter-change indicator, if your model has one.
Doing it yourself vs. a service visit
| DIY change | Service visit | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | Filters only | Filters plus the visit |
| Time | Your time and a towel | Scheduled appointment |
| Extras | Whatever you check yourself | Sanitizing, leak check, performance check |
| Best for | Confident homeowners with easy access | Tight cabinets, offices, or anyone who prefers not to |
Either way, keep a record of each change date.
Questions to ask before you buy any RO system
- How many replaceable stages does it have?
- What is the schedule for each one, for my household?
- Are replacement filters easy to get, and from whom?
- Can I change them myself?
- Does the warranty depend on using specific filters?

Why RO filters matter for chloramine
If your utility disinfects with chloramine, the carbon stage in front of the membrane has a real job to do. Ask whether the system's pre-filtration is rated for chloramine reduction. Read chloramine in city water to learn why.
