What changed and why
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says its Alexander Orr, Jr., John E. Preston and Hialeah plants discontinued fluoride on June 6, 2025, to comply with County Resolution R-370-25 and Florida Senate Bill 700, effective July 1, 2025. WASD says the change does not significantly affect treatment or compliance. Because the Village buys its water from the County and does not treat it, the change reaches Bal Harbour taps.
Reading the Village's data sheet
The Village's 2025 data sheet lists fluoride for Bal Harbour as a full-year range, which includes months before June when fluoride was still added. For current levels, rely on WASD's note that main system fluoride has ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 ppm since discontinuation, or test. For reference, the federal maximum contaminant level for fluoride is 4 ppm.
Ways to reduce fluoride
| Method | Fluoride | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse osmosis | Common method | Check the model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing for fluoride |
| Activated carbon | Not designed for it | Useful for chloramine taste if rated |
| Whole-home filter | Not the usual approach | Treats chloramine at every tap |
See under-sink RO in Bal Harbour.
A pitcher or fridge filter that does not list fluoride should be assumed not to reduce it.
Planning RO in a tower unit
- Check the association's rules on plumbing work.
- Confirm fluoride reduction and rated capacity on the exact model's listing.
- Route RO water to the refrigerator if you want it in ice.
- Add a leak stop under the sink.
- Change filters on schedule; certified performance assumes it.
One RO with chloramine-suited pre-filters handles both fluoride reduction, if certified, and the chloramine taste.
Keep the model number and its listing with your unit records; if you sell or rent the unit, it helps the next occupant know what is installed.
No health claims
We make no health claims for or against fluoride. Questions about fluoride and dental care belong with your dentist or doctor. With fluoride no longer added, many Bal Harbour households choose RO for taste and chloramine rather than fluoride; the equipment is the same, and what you check on the listing is what differs.
A note on older reports
WASD notes that it had added fluoride since 1958 on the advice of public health professionals, until the 2025 change. Older reports show fluoride as an additive, so year-over-year comparisons can look dramatic. Reports from 2026 onward reflect only natural levels from the aquifer.
