What PFAS are
The city's report describes PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) as a class of more than 5,000 compounds used in food packaging, waterproof clothing, non-stick cookware, carpets and some cleaning products. Two of the best known are PFOA and PFOS. Production of those two has largely stopped, but the substances persist in the environment.
Where to see Boca Raton's results
The 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report, posted at myboca.us under Annual Water Quality Report, includes an Unregulated Contaminants (UCMR 5) table with results for PFOA, PFOS and several other PFAS from sampling in 2024 and 2025. UCMR 5 is an EPA program that required utilities to sample for 29 PFAS and lithium between 2023 and 2025.
The report also notes that the EPA set limits for PFOA and PFOS in April 2024, with compliance required in future years, and that the city will keep monitoring as requirements take effect. Read the table yourself; the numbers are the city's to explain, and the Utility Services Department takes questions at 561-338-7306.
What the city says it is doing
According to the 2025 report, the city built its membrane softening treatment plant in 2005 using technology that already includes removal of PFAS substances. The lime softening plant, in operation for more than 50 years, is slated to be enhanced to meet the new EPA rules for PFAS. The city also maintains a PFAS information and updates page on its website.
If you want a home filter for PFAS
- Look for certification to NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) that specifically lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Check the listing for the exact model number, not the brand or product family.
- Follow the filter-change schedule the certification was tested at. A spent filter is not certified performance.
Living Water does not claim that its systems remove PFAS. If PFAS reduction is your goal, Jorge will tell you to verify any system's certification for it, including anything he offers.
Where an in-home test fits
PFAS testing requires a certified laboratory; it is not something a home screening measures. What Jorge's free in-home test does is cover chloramine, hardness and dissolved solids, so you understand the rest of your water while you research PFAS options. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
