What reverse osmosis does
RO pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane that holds back most dissolved solids. Carbon stages before and after the membrane handle taste and odor. Living Water's systems add an alkaline stage that returns minerals to the finished water, for a taste many people prefer. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
Boca Raton residents may recognize the idea: the city's own membrane softening plant, built in 2005, also uses semi-permeable membranes. Your kitchen unit is a small, point-of-use version of a related technology, finishing the water right where you drink it.
Why chloramine matters to an RO system
The city lists chloramine at 2.0 to 3.5 mg/L. Chloramine can wear on RO membranes, so the carbon pre-filter has to be up to the job and changed on schedule. That is one reason filter-change timing is part of the conversation at the test, and one reason a home that already has a whole-home chloramine filter is easy on its RO membrane.
What the install needs
- Room in the sink cabinet for the filter housings and, depending on the model, a storage tank.
- A hole for the dedicated faucet; an existing sprayer hole sometimes works, otherwise the countertop is drilled. Stone counters common in Boca kitchens need the right bit and care.
- A drain connection for the membrane's reject water.
- Optional line to the refrigerator or ice maker.
In condos, it all stays inside your unit, which usually keeps the association out of it. Check your building's rules if you are unsure.
Who it suits in Boca Raton
- Condo and apartment owners who cannot touch the main line.
- Households that buy bottled water for drinking and cooking.
- Homes that already filter the whole house but want a step further at the kitchen.
- Offices and gyms that want a dedicated drinking-water tap.
Certification, plainly
RO systems are commonly certified under NSF/ANSI 58. Certification is model-specific and contaminant-specific, so if a particular contaminant matters to you, check that exact model's listing. Boca Raton's water meets standards; RO is about choosing how your drinking water tastes.
