BOCA RATON · WHOLE-HOME FILTRATION

Whole-Home Water Filtration in Boca Raton

A whole-home system treats water where it enters the house, so every shower, sink and appliance gets the same filtered water. In Boca Raton the main target is chloramine: the city lists a total chlorine residual of 2.0 to 3.5 mg/L. Living Water's Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems are described as removing chlorine and chloramine. Jorge tests your water free first so the system is sized to your home and your results.

Why chloramine is the main reason

The City of Boca Raton Utility Services Department disinfects water from both its lime softening and membrane softening plants with a chlorine compound, and its Water Quality page lists the residual as chloramine. Chloramine is designed to last through 740 miles of city pipe, which is exactly why it is still in the water at your shower head.

That is normal and within standards; the 2025 report shows no violation for disinfectant levels. What a whole-home system changes is the experience: less pool smell in the shower, no chemical note in the coffee, and the same water in the bathroom as at the kitchen tap.

What hardness means for the setup

Boca Raton softens its water at the plant. The city publishes total hardness of 65 to 80 mg/L (3.8 to 4.7 grains per gallon). That changes the conversation compared with cities where homes get much harder water:

  • Many Boca homes are happy with filtration alone.
  • If you see heavy spotting or scale, a test will show whether it is hardness, dissolved solids or simply evaporation.
  • Where a softener does make sense, it is sized to the measured hardness, not a guess.

Where the system goes

A whole-home system connects to the main line after the meter and before the water branches out to the house. In many South Florida homes that point is outside, near a hose bib or along a garage wall. Jorge looks at:

  • Where the main enters and how much room is around it.
  • Whether there is a drain and power nearby, if the system needs them.
  • Whether an irrigation line splits off before the house, so you are not filtering water for the lawn.
  • HOA or community rules about equipment placement, if your neighborhood has them.

If your irrigation runs on the city's IRIS reclaimed water, it is already a separate line and does not touch the filter.

Whole-home vs. kitchen-only

If your main goal is drinking water, an under-sink alkaline reverse osmosis system may be all you need, especially in a condo where the main line is not yours to change. Whole-home filtration makes sense when you care about showers, laundry and every tap. Many single-family homes do both. See whole-house filtration vs. reverse osmosis.

A note on claims

A whole-home carbon system is about taste, odor and comfort. It is not a replacement for city treatment, and it is not a fix for every contaminant. If you are trying to reduce something specific, the equipment must be certified for that contaminant under the relevant NSF/ANSI standard. Check the exact model's listing before you buy, from anyone.

Common questions

Does a whole-home filter remove chloramine?

Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chlorine and chloramine. Chloramine is harder for basic carbon than chlorine, so system design and contact time matter.

Do I need a softener too in Boca Raton?

Not always. The city softens its water and publishes hardness of 3.8 to 4.7 grains per gallon. A test at your tap shows whether a softener adds anything for your home.

Will it filter my sprinkler water?

It should not. The installer should connect after the irrigation split where possible. Homes on IRIS reclaimed water already have separate irrigation.

Can I put one in a condo?

Usually not on the main line. Condo owners typically choose an under-sink RO system for drinking water instead.
