Start with what your water actually needs
The biggest cost driver is the scope. Boca Raton's city water is softened at the Glades Road plant and published at 3.8 to 4.7 grains per gallon of hardness, with a chloramine residual of 2.0 to 3.5 mg/L. For many homes that means:
- Drinking water only: an under-sink RO system.
- Every tap: a whole-home chloramine system.
- Scale protection: a softener only if the test supports it.
Buying equipment you do not need is the most expensive mistake. Testing first prevents it.
Installation factors
- Location of the main line and how much plumbing it takes to reach a good install spot.
- Drain and power near the install point, if the system needs them.
- Irrigation split: separating sprinkler water so you do not filter the lawn.
- Community rules. If your neighborhood has an HOA, its rules about visible equipment can affect where the system goes and what cover it needs.
- Countertop material for an RO faucet.
Ownership costs to ask about
Every system has upkeep. Ask about:
- Filter and media replacement intervals, and what changes them (chloramine level and water use both matter).
- RO membrane life and pre-filter schedule.
- Salt use, if a softener is involved.
- Who does the service and how it is scheduled.
For a framework, see the annual cost of owning a whole-home filter.
What an itemized quote should show
- The exact equipment model and its size.
- Installation labor and any plumbing changes.
- Bypass valve, fittings and any pre-filter.
- Replacement filter schedule.
- What is not included, in writing.
Quotes differ for real reasons; see why installation quotes differ.
Boca-specific things that change the job
A few local details come up often enough to plan for:
- City or county water. Homes inside city limits are on the City of Boca Raton utility; many homes west of the city are on Palm Beach County Water Utilities. Both report using chloramine (the county in its eastern service area), but the reports differ, and the test is done against the right one.
- Reclaimed irrigation. Homes on the city's IRIS reclaimed water already have irrigation on a separate line, which can simplify a whole-home install.
- Private irrigation wells. If stains on walls and walks are the real complaint, that is an irrigation-well question with its own equipment, not a drinking-water filter.
