Hardness sets the size
Softeners are sized in grains of hardness the resin can remove between regenerations. The harder the water and the more you use, the bigger the unit. Boca's city-published range of 65 to 80 mg/L (3.8 to 4.7 grains per gallon) is moderate, which keeps sizing modest for most households. Private well water around Boca has not been through plant softening and can need far more capacity.
Household and business use
- Number of people and bathrooms.
- Peak flow, such as several showers at once.
- For businesses: dishwashers, ice machines, boilers, laundry equipment and how many hours a day they run. Restaurants, hotels and gyms are sized very differently from a home.
Install factors
- Location: garage, utility room or outdoors, and whether it needs a cover or enclosure.
- Drain for regeneration water, and how far it is.
- Power for the control valve.
- Bypass and plumbing changes, including keeping irrigation lines unsoftened.
- Combination with filtration. If you also want chloramine removal, the order and layout of the two systems matter.
Running costs to ask about
- Salt: how much the unit uses at your measured hardness and water use.
- Regeneration water use.
- Resin life and any service visits.
- Who refills salt, especially for a business.

City water vs. a private well
The two are different projects. On Boca city water, hardness has already been reduced by the lime softening and membrane softening plants, so a softener is fine-tuning. On a private well around Boca, the softener may be one part of a larger system that also deals with iron or hydrogen sulfide, and the order of the equipment matters: iron can foul softener resin if it is not handled correctly. That is why a well quote starts with a fuller test. See well water in Boca Raton.
When the honest answer is "skip it"
If your tap tests inside Boca's published range and you are not fighting scale, a softener may not be worth it. The spots on your shower glass may be evaporation and dissolved solids, which a squeegee handles. Jorge will say so. See softener vs. filter.
