Two machines, two jobs
| Water filter | Water softener | |
|---|---|---|
| Main target | Chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor | Calcium and magnesium (hardness) |
| How it works | Carbon and specialty media | Ion exchange with salt regeneration |
| Needs a drain | Depends on the system | Yes |
| What you notice | No pool smell, better-tasting water | Less scale and spotting, slicker feel |
What Boca Raton's water points to
The City of Boca Raton Utility Services Department removes minerals at the plant through two processes: lime softening, in use for more than 50 years, and a membrane softening plant built in 2005. The water then gets a chloramine residual, listed at 2.0 to 3.5 mg/L, to protect it in the pipes.
Put simply, the city does much of a softener's job for you, but it adds the thing a filter is for. That is why Jorge usually starts the conversation with filtration on city water.
When a softener still earns its place
- Your tap tests harder than the city range, for whatever reason.
- You have a private well, where hardness has not been reduced.
- You run a business with equipment that needs scale protection.
- You want the feel of fully softened water and understand it is a comfort choice.
When you want both
A single-family home with a well, or a home where both scale and taste matter, can combine a softener and a filter. The order and sizing matter. On city water, the filter does the heavy lifting and a softener is optional. See the general comparison: water softener vs. water filter.
Read your symptoms
- Chemical or pool smell: filter. See chloramine filters in Boca Raton.
- White crust on faucets and shower heads: hardness, if a test confirms it. See hard water spots.
- Spots on glass that wipe off easily: often evaporation of dissolved solids, which can happen even with moderate hardness.
- Orange stains outside: neither one; that is an irrigation-well iron problem.
Cost and upkeep side by side
The two also differ in what they ask of you after installation. A whole-home filter mostly asks for media or cartridge replacement on a schedule that depends on water use and chloramine level. A softener asks for salt refills, a drain for regeneration water and occasional service. On Boca city water, where hardness is already moderate, it is worth asking whether the softener's ongoing salt and water use buys a difference you will see. Settle it with a test
Jorge measures hardness and chloramine at your tap and explains which system, if any, fits. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974 for the free in-home test.
