The stages, on Coconut Creek water
- Sediment pre-filter: catches particles, useful after hydrant flushing in your area.
- Carbon pre-filters: reduce chloramine, which the city's 2025 report lists at 1.77 to 4.26 ppm across monthly samples.
- RO membrane: reduces dissolved solids.
- Post-filter and remineralization in the alkaline model, for taste and higher pH.
See the compact alkaline RO page.
Who in Coconut Creek chooses RO
- Condo and townhome owners who cannot add a whole-home system.
- Households in HOA communities that prefer nothing visible outside.
- Families that go through a lot of bottled water.
- Homes with a whole-home system that want a dedicated drinking water tap.
- Offices and gyms.
RO is also handy for cooking: rice, soups, coffee and baby formula all start with water, and a dedicated faucet makes it easy to use filtered water every time.
Certifications
RO systems can be certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for specific contaminants such as lead, fluoride or PFOA/PFOS. Only the exact model on the listing counts, under its rated conditions. If a specific contaminant is your reason for buying, check the listing first, including for anything Jorge recommends.
Remember that certification applies to the complete system as tested, with its specified filters. Swapping in off-brand cartridges can change performance.
Alkaline or standard
Standard RO water is low in minerals and slightly acidic; alkaline RO adds minerals back for taste. It is a preference, not a health treatment. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
If you are switching from bottled water, alkaline RO is often the closer match in taste. Try both if you can before deciding.
Installation checklist
- Cabinet space for a tank or tankless unit.
- A faucet hole in the sink or countertop.
- A drain connection.
- Optional refrigerator or ice maker line.
- Water pressure, which Jorge measures.
Most installs take a couple of hours, and in a condo nothing outside your unit changes.
Keeping it working
Pre-filters protect the membrane, so changing them on schedule is what keeps an RO performing for years. Jorge explains the schedule for your water before you buy, and you can see the effect yourself: a TDS reading at the RO faucet compared with the regular tap.
If you are away for long stretches, run the RO faucet for a few minutes when you return, and ask whether the storage tank should be drained first.
