COOPER CITY · WELL WATER

Well Water Treatment in Cooper City

Most Cooper City homes drink city water from Cooper City Utilities, but irrigation wells are common, and some properties nearby rely on private drinking wells. A well gets none of the city's membrane treatment, so the owner is responsible for testing and treating it. The Florida Department of Health recommends testing private wells for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year; Living Water configures treatment from each well's own test.

City water vs. well water here

Cooper City and a private well draw from the same Biscayne Aquifer. The difference is treatment: the city membrane-softens all of its water to remove hardness, minerals, color and organic matter, then chlorinates it. A private well delivers aquifer water untreated, which typically means hardness, possible iron and color, and sometimes hydrogen sulfide.

Cooper City and its rural neighbor

Cooper City borders Southwest Ranches, where the Town's comprehensive plan describes continued reliance on private wells and septic systems. The plan also lists Cooper City Utilities as one of the utilities whose facilities serve the Town, alongside the City of Sunrise. So if you live near the city line, your neighbors may be on Cooper City water, Sunrise water or their own well. See well water in Southwest Ranches.

Irrigation wells

An irrigation well feeds only the sprinklers. The common complaints are orange stains on walls, paving and pool decks, and a sulfur smell when the system runs. An iron filter on the irrigation line is the usual fix.

Keep irrigation wells away from fertilizer storage and septic areas, keep the wellhead sealed, and have a licensed contractor look at any well that starts pumping sand or air.

Testing and permits

Florida DOH says private well owners are responsible for their own water. It recommends a certified lab test for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year, and for lead every three years for most homeowners. Florida does not require well sampling when a private home is sold, so buyers should arrange it. In Broward County, wells 12 inches or smaller, including irrigation wells, need a DOH-Broward permit for construction, repair or abandonment.

How a well system is built

Jorge's free test covers iron, hardness, pH, dissolved solids and sulfur signs. With a lab result, it tells you what the system must do. Living Water uses Puronics equipment and can combine iron and sulfur treatment, softening and a kitchen drinking water stage. If a lab finds bacteria or a specific contaminant, the equipment must be certified for it under the relevant NSF/ANSI standard. See the well water system and UV vs. RO for well water.
