Who it makes sense for
- Households that notice a chlorine smell in the shower or at bathroom sinks, not just the kitchen.
- Families who want the same treated water at every tap.
- Homes where several people are sensitive to the smell during maintenance periods, when the city may raise or change its disinfectant.
If only drinking water matters to you, a kitchen RO system may be all you need.
Why membrane-softened water changes the design
Because Cooper City's membrane process removes hardness, color and natural organic matter before the water leaves the plant, a whole-home system here can focus on the disinfectant instead of carrying extra stages for sediment or softening. That keeps the setup simpler than in areas with harder or more colored water. The test still checks hardness and pH, so the design is based on your tap, not an assumption.
Chlorine or chloramine?
Cooper City's report describes the water as chlorinated and lists the residual as chlorine. In 2025 it also ran a free chlorination of its distribution system as preventive maintenance, a practice Broward County describes as common for systems that use combined chlorine (chloramine). Since the report does not spell out whether ammonia is added, the sensible choice is media rated for chloramine, which also handles free chlorine. Ask Cooper City Utilities at (954) 434-5519 if you want it confirmed.
How the install is planned
- Test total and free chlorine, hardness, pH and dissolved solids at your tap.
- Find where the main line enters, often near the garage in Cooper City's single-family neighborhoods.
- Size the system to your bathrooms and peak flow so the media gets enough contact time.
- Add a bypass valve for service and plan any drain connection.
- Walk through upkeep and replacement intervals in writing.
Irrigation is a separate line
Many Cooper City homes have sprinklers fed by a well or a lake. A whole-home system on the house line does not treat that water, and you would not want it to. If you see stains from sprinklers, that needs its own solution; see orange stains in Cooper City.
