What the report says
The 2025 report states the water is chlorinated for disinfection purposes and lists "Chlorine" in its disinfectants table at 1.9 ppm, against a maximum residual of 4. The 2024 report showed 2.1 ppm, range 1.8 to 2.8. In 2024 the city replaced its chlorine disinfection system, and in 2025 it ran a free chlorination of the distribution system to maintain disinfectant effectiveness.
Why the free chlorination detail matters
Broward County explains that free chlorination is a common practice for water systems using combined chlorine disinfection, meaning chloramine. Cooper City's report does not state which form it uses the rest of the year. If you want certainty, ask Cooper City Utilities at (954) 434-5519, or have Jorge test total and free chlorine at your tap: a large gap between the two points to combined chlorine.
Chlorine vs. chloramine for filters
- Free chlorine reacts quickly with ordinary activated carbon.
- Chloramine is more stable and needs catalytic carbon or media designed for it, with more contact time.
- A filter rated for chloramine handles both; one rated only for chlorine may not.
What to look for
- A chloramine reduction claim on the exact model's NSF/ANSI 42 listing, if chloramine is your concern.
- Sizing to your peak flow, so water gets enough contact time.
- A clear replacement interval at your water use.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chlorine and chloramine. See the chloramine filter guide.
Whole-home or kitchen only
A whole-home system covers showers and every tap. For drinking water only, an under-sink RO system with carbon stages is often enough.
Aquariums and specialist uses
If you keep fish, use a water conditioner rated for chloramine as well as chlorine until you know which your tap carries. Anyone on home dialysis should follow their care team's water instructions. A home filter is not a substitute for that guidance.
