Hardness is handled at the plant
Biscayne Aquifer water is naturally hard. Deerfield Beach's 2025 report describes three processes that address it:
- Lime softening: quicklime "used to reduce hardness."
- Nanofiltration: membranes that remove dissolved minerals, hardness, color and organic matter.
- Reverse osmosis: high-pressure membranes treating Floridan Aquifer water.
The three are blended. The result is water that has been treated for hardness before you ever see it.
Why test anyway
Because the report doesn't give a single hardness number, and blending can vary, the only reliable figure for your home is one measured at your tap. If a seller recommends a softener without measuring, ask why. Jorge gives you the number and says plainly when you don't need one.
Seasonal changes in blending, a long service line or a home that sits unused can all affect what comes out of your tap. A measurement takes a few minutes and removes the guesswork. Jorge also checks iron and pH at the same visit, since those matter if you're considering any equipment at all.
Where softeners fit
- Private wells: untreated Biscayne water can be hard; see well water.
- Businesses: restaurants, hotels, laundries and gyms sometimes need very low hardness for equipment. Living Water offers ion-exchange softening plants for these.
- Unexpected results: if your test shows real hardness, find out why before buying.
For businesses, Jorge starts with the equipment maker's water requirements. A commercial dishwasher, ice machine or boiler may specify a hardness target well below what's in the city water, and a softening plant sized to that target and the daily volume uses salt and water more efficiently than one chosen by guesswork.
A softener isn't a chloramine filter
What most Deerfield Beach residents notice is chloramine, at a 2.6 ppm running average in 2025. A softener doesn't remove it. See softener vs. filter and chloramine filters.
Sodium and salt-free options
The report lists sodium at 18.4 ppm. An ion-exchange softener adds sodium in proportion to the hardness it removes; potassium chloride is an alternative. Health questions about sodium go to your doctor. Salt-free conditioners don't remove hardness; compare in salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Questions for a softener seller
- What hardness did you measure at my tap?
- What problem will a softener solve that I have now?
- How much salt and regeneration water will it use?
- Do I also need chloramine filtration, as a separate unit?
