What makes Deerfield Beach different
Not every utility uses membrane treatment. Deerfield Beach blends lime-softened water with nanofiltered water (membranes that remove hardness) and RO water from the Floridan Aquifer. That combination is why softening at home is often unnecessary here, even though Florida groundwater is hard before treatment.
If you moved from a city with hard water and brought a softener habit with you, test before replacing or adding one. Your old water and your new water may have little in common.
Signs you need a filter
- Chlorine-like taste in coffee, tea or ice.
- A disinfectant smell in hot showers.
- You want lower-TDS drinking water; see best drinking water system.
If any of these sound familiar, chloramine filtration is the likely fit, sized to your home after a test.
Signs a softener might fit
- Household water from a private well.
- Business equipment that specifies low hardness.
- A tap test that shows real hardness.
Even then, measure first: the right softener for a well depends on its hardness and iron, and the right one for a business depends on the equipment's requirements.
Common mix-ups
- Pool smell means hard water: no, that's chloramine, or free chlorine during the annual maintenance period.
- Every spot means hardness: spots can be dissolved solids drying, sprinkler overspray or salt air; see hard water spots.
- A softener filters: it exchanges minerals; it isn't a filter.
Full comparison: softener vs. filter: which do you need.
The free chlorination weeks
Once a year the city switches from chloramine to free chlorine for a few weeks to clean the pipes, and the water can smell more strongly of chlorine. People sometimes read that as a sign of hard or bad water. It's neither; it's routine maintenance. A chloramine filter handles free chlorine too, while a softener doesn't affect either.
For most Deerfield Beach homes on city water, the result after testing is a whole-home chloramine system, an under-sink RO, or both, with no softener. For well properties, iron and hardness usually come first, then filtration. The test sets the order, and it costs nothing.
Decide with data
