DELRAY BEACH · CHLORAMINE FILTER

Chlorine & Chloramine Water Filter in Delray Beach

The City of Delray Beach disinfects its water with chloramines. The 2025 Water Quality Report lists a highest running average of 3.7 ppm, with individual results from 1.54 to 5.2 ppm, against a limit of 4 for the running average. Chloramine is harder for ordinary carbon to break down than chlorine, so a filter for Delray water needs media and sizing built for chloramine, and a certification that names it.

Why utilities use chloramine

Chloramine is chlorine combined with a small amount of ammonia. It stays active longer as water travels through miles of pipe, and it tends to form fewer of some disinfection byproducts. Delray's 2025 report lists total trihalomethanes at 33.1 ppb and haloacetic acids at 22.5 ppb, well under their limits of 80 and 60.

Why plain carbon may struggle

Ordinary activated carbon removes free chlorine quickly. Chloramine reacts more slowly, so it needs more contact time or a catalytic carbon designed for it. A small filter that works well in a chlorine city may let much of Delray's chloramine through at full household flow. Pitchers and fridge filters vary widely; check each model's certification.

Certification to look for

  • NSF/ANSI 42 lists chloramine reduction as an aesthetic claim. Make sure the listing says chloramine, not only chlorine.
  • Check the exact model number and the rated flow and capacity on the certifier's listing.
  • For drinking water, an RO with a chloramine-rated carbon prefilter protects the membrane and improves taste.

Options for a Delray home

  • Whole-home chloramine system: every tap and shower. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chlorine and chloramine.
  • Under-sink RO: drinking and cooking water.
  • Both, for the most complete result.

Aquariums, dialysis and ponds

Chloramine must be removed for home dialysis and for fish. Dialysis patients should follow their care team's instructions. For aquariums, use a dechlorinator labeled for chloramine and ammonia; ask your pet store. These are special uses beyond normal home filtration.

Taste, smell and how long water sits

Chloramine has a milder smell than free chlorine, but many people still notice it, especially in a hot shower or a glass of water poured straight from the tap. The level at your faucet also depends on how long the water has been in the pipes. Homes at the end of a long run, or a condo where water sits overnight in the building's risers, can taste different from a house near a main line. That is one more reason to size a system from your own measurement rather than the citywide average.

Measure yours

Delray's results ranged from 1.54 to 5.2 ppm across sampling points. Jorge measures chloramine at your tap so the system is sized for your number. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974 for a free test.

What chloramine level does the city report?

A highest running average of 3.7 ppm, with results from 1.54 to 5.2 ppm.

Will a pitcher remove chloramine?

Only if that exact model is certified for chloramine reduction. Many are certified for chlorine only.

Does boiling remove chloramine?

Boiling is not a practical way to remove chloramine. Use a filter certified for it.

Will the new plant change the disinfectant?

The city has not said so in its published information. Choose equipment that handles both chlorine and chloramine.
