Why chloramine matters for RO
RO membranes do not tolerate chlorine-type disinfectants well. In a chloramine city like Delray Beach, the carbon prefilter does double duty: it improves taste and protects the membrane. Ask which carbon the system uses, how it is rated for chloramine, and how often it is changed. A membrane damaged by disinfectant loses performance quietly, so the prefilter schedule matters more here than in a chlorine-only area.
What the stages do
- Sediment: catches particles from the line.
- Carbon: reduces chloramine and chlorine, protecting the membrane.
- RO membrane: reduces dissolved solids. The city's 2025 report lists sodium at 31.8 ppm and fluoride at 0.54 ppm; RO is a common method for reducing both.
- Post-filter and alkaline stage: polish taste and add minerals to raise pH.
Check the exact model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing for any contaminant you care about.
Fit for Delray homes and condos
- Older homes: check cabinet space and drain condition; older drains may need a new fitting.
- Condos near the beach and downtown: under-sink RO usually avoids building-level plumbing; check association rules.
- Ice makers: most systems can feed the refrigerator line.
Alkaline vs. standard
Standard RO water can taste flat. An alkaline stage adds minerals back for taste and pH. It is a preference, not a health claim. If you cook with a lot of water, for rice, pasta or soups, either type works; many people simply prefer the taste of the alkaline version in coffee and tea. Compare alkaline vs. standard RO and tankless vs. tank RO.
Signs it is time for service
- The filtered water starts to taste like the tap again, which often means the carbon prefilter is spent.
- The faucet runs slower or the tank refills slowly.
- A TDS reading of the filtered water creeps up compared with when the system was new.
Jorge leaves the reading from installation day so you have a baseline to compare later. A simple handheld TDS meter lets you check it yourself between visits.
Upkeep in plain terms
- Prefilters and post-filters on a schedule set by your use.
- Membrane replacement less often, depending on dissolved solids and prefilter care.
- Some water goes to the drain while the system makes filtered water; ask for the ratio.
