Is it hardness or something else?
| Sign | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| White, chalky crust on fixtures | Hardness (calcium carbonate) |
| Spots that wipe off with vinegar | Hardness minerals |
| Orange or brown marks | Iron, often from a well |
| Cloudy film on glass that will not wipe off | Etching from dishwasher detergent, not hardness |
Why Florida City homes should measure
The Biscayne Aquifer is limestone, and limestone dissolves into groundwater as calcium. Some utilities remove much of that with lime softening. Florida City's report describes groundwater disinfected by chlorination, with no softening step mentioned and no published hardness number. That makes your own tap reading the deciding fact, not a neighbor's experience or a utility table from elsewhere.
Dissolved solids matter too. Even water with modest hardness can leave faint spots from other minerals and salts; the city lists sodium at 24 ppm, for example. A total dissolved solids reading alongside hardness shows which you are dealing with.
Softener vs. conditioner
- Ion-exchange softener: removes calcium and magnesium; needs salt and a drain. Living Water's softening equipment works this way.
- Salt-free conditioner: designed to change how scale forms; does not remove hardness minerals. Spots can still appear where water dries.
Compare in salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Where scale costs you
- Water heaters lose capacity as scale builds.
- Shower heads and aerators clog.
- Dishwashers and coffee makers need more descaling.
- Glass shower doors need constant cleaning.
Pool owners see it as a white line at the waterline tile, especially in summer when evaporation is high and the pool is topped off often.
Cleaning tips while you decide
- White vinegar dissolves fresh hardness spots on glass and chrome; rinse well afterward.
- Squeegee shower doors after each use to stop spots forming.
- Soak clogged aerators and shower heads in vinegar.
- Use a dishwasher rinse aid.
If spots return within days, the water is the cause, and testing tells you whether softening is worth it.
Bring a photo of the worst spot or crust if it is not easy to see during the visit.
Commercial scale
Restaurants and motels feel scale in ice machines, dish machines and water heaters first. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses, sized to daily use.
