Why test instead of guess
Some Miami-Dade utilities lime-soften their water before it reaches you; WASD describes doing so at its Alexander Orr, Jr. plant, for example. Florida City's report is shorter: groundwater from the Biscayne Aquifer, disinfected by chlorination. With no softening step described and no published hardness number, the reading at your kitchen tap is what counts. Jorge measures it in grains per gallon and shows you the result.
How an ion-exchange softener works
- Water flows through a tank of resin beads.
- The beads trade calcium and magnesium (hardness) for sodium.
- When the resin is loaded, the system regenerates with brine from a salt tank and rinses to a drain.
The result is water that leaves fewer spots and less scale on fixtures, glass, water heaters and dishwashers. Living Water sells ion-exchange softening plants for homes and for businesses such as restaurants, motels, laundries, car washes and offices.
Signs worth testing for
- White crust on shower heads and faucet aerators.
- Cloudy spots on glasses after the dishwasher.
- Soap that does not lather well.
- A tank water heater that rumbles or loses capacity.
These can come from hardness, but some come from dissolved solids or high water-heater temperatures. See hard water spots in Florida City.
Sodium and salt questions
Florida City's 2025 report lists sodium at 24 ppm. A softener adds some sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which is why many homes pair a softener with an under-sink RO for drinking water. If you follow a sodium-restricted diet, ask your doctor and let Jorge know; he will factor it into the recommendation.
Installation details in Florida City
- A drain for the regeneration rinse, and a plan for where it discharges, especially on homes with septic systems.
- Space for the resin and brine tanks in a garage or utility area.
- A bypass valve so you can isolate the system for service.
- Salt access: someone in the household needs to refill the brine tank.
Homes vs. businesses in Florida City
For a house, the question is comfort and fixture care. For a restaurant, motel or laundromat, it is equipment protection: scale inside ice machines, dish machines, boilers and water heaters raises maintenance and shortens service life. Commercial softening plants are sized to daily gallons and peak demand, and some businesses run a softener only on the hot water or equipment lines. Jorge tests at the points that matter and sizes from there.
Next step
Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974. If your test shows little hardness, he will tell you that you do not need a softener. If it shows enough to cause problems, he will size one to your household and give you an itemized quote. Compare options first in softener vs. filter.
