What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in non-stick cookware, stain- and water-resistant fabrics, food packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly in the environment. EPA's PFAS pages explain the federal drinking water rule, which compounds it covers and the compliance timeline for utilities.
What PBCWUD's eastern data shows
The 2025 report's eastern UCMR 5 table lists results sampled in May and August 2025. Two examples, as printed:
| Compound | Level detected (average) | Range | Minimum reporting level |
|---|---|---|---|
| PFOA | 0.0047 ug/L | ND to 0.0090 ug/L | 0.004 ug/L |
| PFOS | 0.0092 ug/L | ND to 0.02 ug/L | 0.004 ug/L |
The table also lists PFBS, PFHxA, PFHxS, PFPeA, PFBA and PFHpA, among others. Note the units, micrograms per liter, before comparing with anything. The report says the level detected is an average or the highest detected level at a sampling point, depending on sampling frequency.
How to read it
UCMR 5 is a monitoring program to help EPA learn how often these compounds occur. A detection is information, not a verdict. Compare values with EPA's current rules on its PFAS pages, and ask PBCWUD at 561-740-4600 how its results compare and what its plans are. The report also does not say which plant serves which neighborhood, so the systemwide range is the best public picture for a Greenacres address.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that specifically lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replace cartridges on schedule; certified performance applies only within rated capacity.
EPA has a page on identifying filters certified to reduce PFAS. Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to check any model's certification before buying, including anything he shows you.
Testing and private wells
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. If your Greenacres property uses a private well, the county's data does not cover it, and a certified lab is the only way to know. See home screening vs. lab analysis and well water in Greenacres.
