HIALEAH GARDENS · IRON STAINS

Orange & Rust Stains From Water in Hialeah Gardens

Orange or rust-colored stains on walls, driveways, fences and pool edges in Hialeah Gardens almost always come from sprinkler water pumped from a shallow irrigation well, which carries dissolved iron that oxidizes in the air. City water from Miami-Dade is treated before delivery and is rarely the cause. Stains inside sinks or toilets point to a well, old galvanized plumbing, or occasional sediment after line work. Testing tells you which.

Why irrigation water stains

Shallow groundwater in South Florida can carry dissolved iron. Clear when pumped, it reacts with oxygen and turns into the familiar orange deposit wherever it lands and dries. Miami-Dade's watering rules apply to private wells too: the county's year-round restrictions cover any water source, with lawn watering limited to two days a week by address and outside the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. window. Less spray on walls means fewer stains.

City water in Hialeah Gardens

Your tap water is Miami-Dade water, lime-softened and filtered at county plants and delivered by the Hialeah Gardens Water and Sewer Department. WASD also adds a phosphorous compound for corrosion control. The city's 2025 report reports that all service lines in its system are non-lead materials. If discolored water from the city persists, call the department at (305) 822-3017.

Treating an irrigation well

  • Iron filtration sized for the pump's flow.
  • Oxidation plus filtration for higher iron levels.
  • Head adjustment so water does not hit walls, screens or the pool deck.

Jorge tests the well water to see how much iron is present and recommends what fits. For a drinking well, see well water treatment and well water systems.

Cleaning stains you already have

Treatment stops new stains; it does not remove old ones. Existing iron stains on stucco, pavers and pool tile usually need a cleaner made for rust, applied according to the surface manufacturer's directions. Test a small hidden spot first, since some cleaners can etch stone or change paint color. Plan the cleaning after the irrigation water is fixed, or the stains come back within weeks.

Common questions

Is Hialeah Gardens tap water causing my orange stains?

Rarely. Outdoor stains in a spray pattern usually come from irrigation well water.

Can orange stains be prevented?

Yes, by treating iron on the irrigation line or keeping spray off surfaces.

Do watering restrictions apply to my well?

Yes. Miami-Dade's year-round restrictions apply to private wells, canals and lakes as well as utility water.

Why did my water turn brown after street work?

Work on the mains can stir up sediment. Run cold water until it clears, and call the city if it does not.
