What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are used in nonstick, stain-resistant and water-repellent products, some firefighting foams and many industrial processes. They break down very slowly. WASD's report lists likely sources as discharge from manufacturing and industrial facilities, certain consumer products, occupational exposures and certain firefighting activities.
What Miami-Dade's report shows
WASD's 2025 report has a table called 2025 Additional Contaminants Monitoring. For the Main System, which serves the county's common distribution network, it lists:
| PFAS | Federal MCL | Main System result |
|---|---|---|
| PFOS | 4 ppt | 33 ppt (range 7 to 33) |
| PFOA | 4 ppt | 13 ppt (range 3 to 13) |
| PFHxS | 10 ppt | 7 ppt (range 2 to 7) |
| PFNA | 10 ppt | 5 ppt (not detected to 5) |
| Hazard Index | 1 | 1 (range 0.2 to 1) |
The report explains that these standards were recently promulgated and that initial compliance monitoring is underway, so the table is not scored as violations. Hialeah Gardens' own 2025 report states that it receives its water from Miami-Dade County.
Why one tap may differ from the report
The county measures PFAS where treated water enters the distribution system. Hialeah Gardens then carries that water through its own pipes. The report describes that water system, not any single kitchen. If you want a number for your own tap, only a certified laboratory can give it. Ask the lab which method it uses and which PFAS it reports, so you can compare the result with the report's table.
A federal rule still in motion
The EPA set limits for six PFAS in April 2024 and in 2025 announced plans to extend the deadline for PFOA and PFOS and to rescind limits for several others. Check the EPA's PFAS drinking water page for the current status.
How to judge a PFAS filter
- Certification to NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis), specifically listing PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing. A certified product from a brand does not make all its products certified.
- The replacement schedule the certification was tested under.
- Skepticism toward general claims like "removes chemicals" without a listing.
The EPA's guide to identifying certified PFAS filters links to those listings.
What Jorge can and cannot do
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge's free in-home test covers disinfectant, hardness and other everyday factors, not PFAS, which require a certified laboratory measuring parts per trillion. He can show you where the results are in the report and walk through the certifications to look for. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
