What the city's report shows
The fluoride line in Hialeah's 2025 report lists results for the Miami-Dade WASD water and the Hialeah RO plant water, both under the legal limit, and a footnote saying fluoride is added to promote strong teeth. Because annual reports describe the previous year, that wording reflects practice before the 2025 changes. The next reports will show where levels land now.
What changed in 2025
- County: Miami-Dade WASD says it stopped adding fluoride effective May 29, 2025, after a Board of County Commissioners decision and state legislation. WASD had added fluoride since 1958.
- State: Florida Statutes section 403.859 now prohibits using any additive in a public water system that does not meet the state's definition of a water quality additive.
Fluoride is also naturally present in groundwater, so some will remain in both the Biscayne and Floridan Aquifer supplies.
How home filters handle fluoride
Reverse osmosis is one of the most common home methods. The membrane rejects most dissolved minerals, and fluoride is among them. It is the same principle as the city's RO plant, applied at your kitchen sink.
Activated alumina is a specialty medium that adsorbs fluoride; performance depends on contact time and pH.
Standard carbon, in most pitchers and refrigerator filters, is not generally designed for fluoride.
For any product, check that the exact model is certified for fluoride reduction, typically under NSF/ANSI 58 for RO.
Alkaline RO in a Hialeah kitchen
Living Water's under-sink alkaline RO systems are multi-stage units with a dedicated faucet and a final stage that adds minerals back after the membrane. They fit house, townhome and apartment kitchens. Ask Jorge for the certification listing of the specific model so you can confirm its reduction claims. Comparing designs? See alkaline vs. standard RO.
Health questions go to your dentist or doctor
Whether to filter fluoride is a personal decision, and this page does not argue for or against it. For questions about fluoride and your family's teeth or health, talk with your dentist or doctor. For equipment, call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
